Women in mathematics

The School of Mathematics actively supports women in mathematics. Here are some regular events for women in the school:

Weekly gathering: Tuesdays during term time, 1pm at SM4

Every Tuesday during term time all women in the school of mathematics and the department of engineering mathematics are encouraged to bring their lunch and meet at 1pm in SM4. This includes all female staff and graduate students. In many areas of mathematics women are in the minority and this is a chance to meet female staff and postgraduate students they would not normally encounter.

"We meet for a chat or advice - just a forum to get to know each other and lend a hand if we can."

Meeting for new female undergraduates:

This year we met 1pm on Tuesday 25 October 2011 in SM4.

Each October first-year female undergraduates in mathematics and engineering mathematics are invited to tea and cakes with female members of staff and postgraduate students. This is a chance for the students to meet each other and also to see who the women in mathematics are so that they feel able to come and ask for advice later during their degree if necessary.

Meeting for third and fourth year female undergraduates:

Each January or February upper-year female undergraduates are invited to tea and cakes with female members of staff and graduate students. This is a chance to talk about careers options and opportunities for graduate study.
