Degrees offered

The School offers cutting-edge PhD and taught Masters programmes and welcomes applications from national and international students all year round:

  • PhD in Mathematics: Choose from Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics or Statistics and Probability, the School is internationally renowned for being excellent in each. The duration of a PhD is between three and four years.

  • MSc Mathematical Sciences: A one-year taught course. The programme would be ideal for those hoping to pursue a career in finance, commerce and science, and would provide a solid grounding in cutting-edge mathematics for those interested in doctoral study. Students choose an area of current research and then take taught units from October to April and write a dissertation in that area until September.

  • Master of Research (M.Res.) in Statistics: A one-year taught course in Statistics and Probability or Complexity Sciences (an interdisciplinary research centre involving staff from the Applied and Statistics groups). The MRes aims to provide a bridge for strong students between Undergraduate and PhD study, allowing them to increase the depth and breadth of their understanding in a range of topics in statistics and probability, and develop their overall research perspective and vision before finalizing their area of research. The MRes programme can be combined with a three-year PhD to form a "1+3" programme. There are studentships available.

  • A one-year M.Sc. by research programme in Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Probability or in an interdisciplinary programme on Natural Hazards.
