Undergraduate Computing Facilities

The School has 50 PCs available for use in the computer lab on the ground floor of the main Mathematics building. The lab is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

Programs available

Mathematical packages include LaTex, Maple, Matlab, Python, R and Winbugs. You will be able to gain experience in these packages during practical sessions that form part of your course. Lecturers and/or postgraduates will be on hand during these sessions to offer advice if needed.

Other useful packages include Acrobat Reader, Endnote, Exceed, FireFox, Microsoft Office, Serif Draw, Serif Photo and SSH Secure Shell Client.

Instructions

Use your University username and password to log-on to a PC. When you log on, you will have your MyFiles folder automatically available. This will be in the form of the O: drive and your Documents folder. All PCs have the default printer "MATHUGLAB-Duplex" available.

Some tips

The following issues come up quite regularly and you can save yourself some stress by doing these things.

  • If you want to edit an important file that you may well have to submit for course work, make a copy of it before you start making changes. Then, if you make a serious error editing your file (it does happen!) you can recover back to the original.
  • Be aware that copying graphs and diagrams from mathematical packages into Word documents can result in your document becoming very large.
